How to keep New Year's resolutions & create healthy habits for life! (Minus the "get healthy" clichés.)
Chances are, you're more in the mood for an afternoon nap than a New Year resolution rally, so I won't bombard you with motivating talk like, "New Year, New You!"
Instead, I have ONE question for you:
WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP?
I'm not getting all floaty and ethereal on you. I'd truly like to know what makes you beam like a contented little light bulb?
What makes you feel like all's well in the world?
The house is a mess, the news is forecasting more gloom tomorrow, your cat just vomited on the carpet - not the tiles, your idea of bliss involves a Panadol and a dark room, your boss asked you to work late - again, you don't know what to make for dinner tonight (let alone the next six!), you're wearing your last pair of clean underwear and it's only mid-week, you're the unofficial mediator for the latest family debacle, you've run out of toilet paper AND tissues, your favourite barista has gone on an extended (unauthorized by you!) holiday and...the delicious messiness of life continues.
So why am I asking you this ONE question? Because - and I kid you not - you do more of that (what lights you up), and ALL aspects of your life will start to change.
The bumps and bruises of life don't hit you so hard; you skate rather than sink.
I can imagine you might be sitting there and thinking, "Yes, Lauren, that's all well and good, but I really need to get healthier, so I stop getting every bug that goes around, having days off work and pissing off my boss!"
This is what I'd like to say to you: When you feel more fulfilled, more joyous, more creative and more alive, then that has one of THE most positive impacts on your physical health, your mental-emotional state, your family situation and your daily life. It's that nifty I-don't-know-how-this-works-exactly-but-it-does ripple effect!
When you are more present and connected (through doing more of what lights you up), then you have a much better chance of receiving an "awareness download" to make those other important life changes... You'll be walking down the health food aisle when suddenly the thought hits you: You know what, I really need to get myself some of that gut-loving kombucha I keep seeing everywhere!
The upshot: Investing a smidgen of time each week in doing something you truly love will reap you more rewards than any mind-created resolution list that loses its shine quicker than a precocious 8-year-old kid playing with their new drum set.
I'll leave you now to leisurely ruminate on what lights you up...
